when I use the effect “You can detach 1 material from this card; look at your opponent’s Extra Deck and banish 1 monster from it, face-down”

Did your opponent have cards in their Deck, greater than or equal to the number of their banished facedown cards? If not, then the effect cannot be activated as you can’t banish an equal number.
