New Alternative Format idea: Kitt's Fantasy

Kitt’s Fantasy

Have you ever thought modern Yu-Gi-Oh is all about staples ? Do you hate them ?

We certainly do ! Welcome to Kitt’s Fantasy, a format that aims to limit the use of staples in deckbuilding by restricting the number of archetypes in decks. In this format, your archetype goes head to head against your opponents’ and you will have to squeeze use out of every single card you have access to.

With 3 Style options of Decks you can pick from, slight rule ajustments and Duel Links-inspired banlist, Kitt’s Fantasy offers an alternative to modern and Genesys where generic pile monstrosities will be purged.

Background

This format was imagined and created by @logofmxf alongside myself (@ilwyvern). We wanted to limit slop decks while creating a new meta using ideas that we feel were underused in the game.

We try to be active in the development of this format but proceeding without players is difficult. If you find the idea interesting, please try building a deck and play a few games ! It would really help us a lot to receive feedback through the forms at the bottom of this post. You can find all the information on the format in the spread sheet next to it.

Detailed Rules and deviations from Modern:

  • Pendulum Zones: The Additional Pendulum Zones have been brought back, positioned exactly as they were under Master Rule 3. However, all other Pendulum mechanics follow the rules established in Master Rule 5.

  • Banlist System: The Banlist (see the Banlist tab) functions like the Duel Links Banlist. Cards are divided into six limit tiers. Each tier restricts how many cards from that tier a player can include in their deck:

    • Limit 1: You can include only 1 card from this tier.
    • Limit 2: You can include up to 2 cards from this tier.
(and so on, up to Limit 6).

You can still only include up to 3 copies of any individual card in your deck, as usual.

  • Deck Styles: players can choose from three deck styles, each with its own restrictions and requirements.

    • Mono Deck: You may use only one Archetype. Your Main Deck must include at least 25 cards from that Archetype, while the remaining cards may be non-archetype (generic) cards. In the Extra Deck, the Archetype used must be the same as the one in the Main Deck, and the number of generic cards is limited to half the number of in-archetype cards.

    • Dual Deck: You may use up to two Archetypes. Your Main Deck must include at least 35 combined cards from those Archetypes, with a minimum of 15 cards from each. In the Extra Deck, the Archetypes used must match those in the Main Deck, and the number of generic cards is limited to half the number of cards from the most-represented Archetype.

    • Tri Deck: You may use up to three Archetypes. Your Main Deck must include at least 45 combined cards from those Archetypes, with a minimum of 12 cards from each. In the Extra Deck, the Archetypes used must match those in the Main Deck, and the number of generic cards is limited to half the number of cards from the most-represented Archetype.
