I tested and Evenly Matched works even for your scenario. Most likely you didn’t end the Battle Phase. The card can only be activated at the End of the Battle Phase. If you don’t end the Battle Phase, it can’t happen. Essentially, in the simulator, this means you must attempt to go to Main phase 2 or EP.
